How to Be A Serial Killer

I was really hoping that how to be a serial killer would be something like the rise Leslie Vernon.

The movie sets a funny tone at the very beginning, with a psychiatrist talking about serial killers and then jumping into an infomercial  that is a self-help seminar about being a serial killer.
I have to admit pleasant irony that the person the self-help speaker is trying to tempt into becoming a serial killer happens to be Matthew Gray Gubler… Better known as detective Spencer Reid who catches serial killers on criminal minds! He plays the awkward outsider really well, and is the perfect father for this weird self-help speaker.

We start off with the rules. number one is etiquette… Things like you don’t hurt children or animals, it’s not about rape, were just serial killers. And of course serial killers and kill people!

Next is to pick the right weapon for the right job. And of course, we get flashbacks to illustrate the use of each weapon, from a baseball bat to a lawn mower.

Rule three is to be a nice guy, sort no one would expect. Do you need a good home life. We need friends, neighbors,

Rule 04, experience is the best teacher. Serial killing, you’ve got to get out there and do it! Get out there, and experience it!
05, perseverance and discipline.

Six, act in accordance with your own desires. And this is where we get to see some real preparation for the next target. Also given a conversation about how likely it is to call the police, and how slow the police typically respond. We also start to speculate on the idea of diminishing returns… Because eventually, you’re going to want to kill somebody you know.  Serious trying to be a comedy. Indeed, when we get to the next part we’re back to the motivational speaker talking about how the last thing you want, body. It’s kind consuming and dangerous. And indeed, that’s where we’re at with these guys having to hide a body I have somebody that they know. Now it’s time to run, which is the next rule… Always have your getaway plan ready. And of course, that final rule is if you think you can get away you can… But was 20 minutes still left in the film, can they?

All in all, the rules give us an interesting framework, and set up a really fun premise. But I think where the movie fails, is that it never completely commits. It’s very dry humor, I like the office… And it feels flat far too often. If you wanna do a black comedy, you should do a black COMEDY, with the emphasis on comedy. As it is, this is just a touch too much and spend a little bit too much time just being talky with an ending you see coming a mile away.. The motivational speaker is such a brilliant device (especially when juxtaposed with the talking head criminal psychologist, sitting in front of his rose and rose of books.), but the rest of the film isn’t nearly as funny and charming as he is, and I think the mismatch Drags it down. This is another one of those kind of movies that really belongs in a box set like this. It’s nice to experiment with, but I think I’d be a little disappointed if I paid for it alone.
